Pool Removal in Moolap

Digging below ground in Moolap can meet soil that a government field guide lists as a possible coastal location for acid sulfate soils, which matter when ground is dug and exposed. CSIRO's 2005 laboratory analyses found at most marginal potential in one layer at one sampled Point Henry site, so the fair reading is possible, not proven, and both documents are old.

Pool Removal around Moolap

The Corangamite Catchment Management Authority's field guide on acid sulfate soils, prepared for its Soil Health Strategy 2008 to 2012, says possible coastal locations in its region include Point Henry and Moolap, and the Bellarine Peninsula, including Lake Connewarre. The same guide says the existing maps of known locations are still in development and should be considered as indicative, not absolute. It adds that whatever an individual's role in excavation or construction work, everyone shares responsibility for being aware of the potential for acid sulfate soils.

CSIRO's report to the City of Greater Geelong, dated July 2005, balances that. Its laboratory analyses showed only one soil layer, at one of the sites sampled (Point Henry, PH02), with at most a marginal acid sulfate soil potential. Pool removal means breaking and excavating below ground, so ask the provider whether the dug soil has been looked at before it is spread or taken away. EPA Victoria says that where waste soil meets the definition of industrial waste, duties under the Environment Protection Act 2017 apply to managing, transporting, depositing and receiving it; this page does not say whether soil from a Moolap pool is such waste.

Permits and City of Greater Geelong rules

Whether removing or filling in a pool here needs a permit is for the City of Greater Geelong to confirm: its pages say building permits are required for almost all new buildings, alterations, demolition and change of use, and say nothing on filling in or removing a pool.
