Pool Removal in Geelong — questions and answers
Short answers on removing a pool in Geelong: what the council asks for, whether a permit is needed, who may do the work, what breaking a concrete shell puts in the air and where the water goes. Every rule is a regulator's or the City of Greater Geelong's own, with its read date. This site sets no prices.

How much does pool removal cost in Geelong?
We do not answer that with a price, because no government source sets one. The council publishes one fee that touches a removal, A$167.00 for subsequent visit and decommission inspections on its fee list, and whether it applies to your pool is for the City to say. For work worth more than A$10,000 a practitioner must be registered and the contract must be in writing. Ask for more than one written quote and compare what each one covers. The costs page sets out what a quote should list. The costs page's Pool removal costs and rules check lists the Victorian and City of Greater Geelong rules that can apply, each with its source.
What does the City of Greater Geelong want from me?
It asks you to tell it that you no longer have a pool, so it can remove the pool from its register, and lists evidence such as photos among what to provide. Asset Protection Permit and building permit questions are separate and are for the City to answer.

Lowest mean rainfall
Best months: Feb, Mar, Dec
These three months have the lowest mean rainfall in the Bureau's record for its Breakwater (Geelong Racecourse) station, which began in 2011. It is a short average at one station, not a forecast, and it says nothing about when a pool may be removed.

Highest mean rainfall
Avoid: Jun, Oct, Nov
These three months have the highest mean rainfall in the same record. Avoid here means only that more rain is likely to fall on an open hole. Ask the provider how an open hole is handled in rain.

The record is short and belongs to one station. It is not a forecast, and it does not say when a pool may or should be removed.
Process
Is breaking up a concrete shell dangerous?
It makes dust. Concrete contains crystalline silica, and WorkSafe Victoria says effective dust controls, such as on-tool water suppression or on-tool dust extraction, need to be used when demolishing materials that contain it. Ask the provider which control they use.
Where does the water go?
Not into the stormwater drain. EPA Victoria says everyone must prevent waste, wastewater included, from entering stormwater drains so far as reasonably practicable. We have not found a government source on where pool water may be drained in Geelong, so ask the provider and the water authority.
Timing
How quickly can someone get to me?
We cannot promise a time. It depends on the provider's bookings. Form and phone enquiries are passed to a local provider, who contacts you directly.
Is there a better time of year to remove a pool?
No source we read says there is. The Bureau of Meteorology's rainfall record for its Breakwater (Geelong Racecourse) station, which began in 2011, shows February, March and December with the lowest mean rainfall and June, October and November with the highest. That is a short average at one station, not a forecast, so ask the provider how an open hole is handled in rain.
Permits and approvals
Do I need a building permit or an Asset Protection Permit?
The pages we read do not say. The City says an Asset Protection Permit is required before any demolition, construction or other building works on a property and lists installing a pool, not removing one; apply at least three weeks ahead if you are told you need one. It says building permits are required for almost all new buildings, alterations, demolition and change of use. Whether yours is one of those is for the City to answer.

Service area
Which suburbs do you cover?
The City of Greater Geelong only. Four pages are written around one sourced fact each: Barwon Heads, Portarlington, Moolap and Lara. Places in the Surf Coast Shire or the Borough of Queenscliffe, such as Point Lonsdale, are not covered.
Does this site remove pools?
No. This site is run by a marketing company, which passes each enquiry to an independent qualified local provider. The provider inspects the pool, quotes and does any work itself; we have no crews or plant.
